The career that began in a salon chair is now creating opportunities for the next generation.

Ruby Jo Lomax knows the power of an apprenticeship because it changed the direction of her own life. RJL Apprenticeships brings that journey full circle: combining real salon experience, high standards and the belief that practical education can open extraordinary doors.

Where it began

Ruby began her hairdressing apprenticeship in 2007. Working inside a busy salon gave her far more than technical ability. She learned how to communicate with clients, work as part of a team, understand the pace of a commercial salon and build the confidence that comes from doing the job for real.

In 2009, that commitment was recognised when Ruby was named Apprentice of the Year across all apprenticeship sectors at Bolton College.

From apprentice to salon owner

At just 22, Ruby opened her first salon, Escape Hairdressing & Beauty. The lessons she had learned as an apprentice remained at the heart of the business: strong client care, high professional standards and a belief that talent grows fastest when people are trusted with real responsibility and supported properly.

Building RJL Education HQ

After years in the industry, Ruby founded RJL Education HQ to give aspiring hair and beauty professionals access to practical, industry-recognised education. Her experience as both an apprentice and an employer shaped an approach that connects learning to the skills, confidence and commercial awareness people need in the workplace.

Bringing the journey full circle

The launch of RJL Apprenticeships is personal. It is a chance to give young people the route Ruby was given, while helping salons develop motivated, capable professionals who understand the realities of the industry from day one.

As new government support opens more opportunities for employers from October 2026, Ruby wants to help bring salon-based learning back to the centre of hairdressing education — strengthening local salons while creating genuine careers for the next generation.
