Hair and beauty careers
You will be taught core skills during your first month, including shampooing and conditioning the hair and scalp, styling and dressing hair, and the basics of cutting and colouring. Alongside these important practical skills, you will learn theory modules on topics such as health and safety, consultation skills, and even business management, during which you will learn entrepreneurial skills such as how to make a positive impression on social media.
During your second month, your practical training will become more specialised. You will gain an in-depth understanding of colouring techniques, using the different types of Wella lightening products, as well as more complicated cutting techniques such as graduation bobs and layered haircuts. You will also practise using different social media platforms to create pictures and videos of your clients. Your theory will also take a step up, as you’ll learn why we use rollers or heated appliances when setting hair, as well as understanding hair structures and growth cycles. You will learn about the ICC colour chart, neutralising unwanted tones, how products affect hair structure, and more.
In Month 3, you will start recapping a variety of cutting techniques on both long and short hair, as well as begin to practise more advanced colouring techniques including foils, balayage, freehand techniques, and root fade. Your theory modules will start to become more specialised, including costs of running a salon, identifying profits against stock, understanding business promotions, booking systems, and more. Also this month, you will join other learners on an organised trip to the Wella Academy, where you will attend a full day on their focus 2 programme.
Month 4 will see you learning more complex hair cutting techniques, including using club cutting and razor thinning. You will also gain further understanding of business management, such as promotion, reception, and giving off a positive impression. In this month you will learn about chemical straightening, Kerastraight, and relaxing natural hair. When it comes to theory, you will gain an understanding of how chemical and non-chemical relaxing products affect hair.
In your final month on this course, you will gain the chance to implement all of the skills and theory you have learnt, aiming to work to salon timings and guidelines. You will be working within a realistic salon environment, completing all assessments and working on advanced techniques. Once you have completed your qualification, you are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Hairdresser with The Hairdressing Council.
