Got experience in the hair industry or already hold an NVQ Level 2 in hairdressing? Upgrade your skills on our fast-track NVQ Level 3 course at RJL Education. Led by experts with years of experience in the field, you’ll be fully equipped to work as a senior stylist or freelance hairdresser.
Our fast-track NVQ Level 3 hairdressing diploma prepares you for the realities of being a senior stylist, in a third of the time. Our course is designed for learners who are looking to expand on their current hairdressing knowledge by introducing them to a variety of new technical skills, as well as how to market them.
Throughout this Level 3 course, your professional tutors will regularly assess your progress on the course, providing a personal appraisal at the end of every stage or module. This is to make sure you are progressing on the course and achieving the learning goals required by the centre.
Due to the fast-track nature of the course, you must complete it in its entirety with no breaks or holidays other than over the Christmas period when the Bolton-based centre closes. This is to ensure you achieve your potential as soon as possible.

A kit is not provided for this course but if you need one please let us know and we can provide one at an additional charge. We can tailor a kit to suit your needs.
Once you have completed your course, you will gain a full NVQ Level 3 in hairdressing. With this qualification, you can go fully freelance, or work at a salon as a senior stylist to increase your earning potential. Want to supplement your skills? Should you wish to further your education, you could apply for our Level 4 VTCT course or a certificate in Higher Education.
Hair and beauty careers
You will learn about handling in-depth consultations, asking questions and sharing knowledge with your clients to get them the best result. You will develop understanding about why certain hairstyles may or may not suit a client, taking face shapes, hair growth patterns, eye and skin colours into consideration. You will also learn a variety of colouring and lightening techniques, from foiling techniques to using quasi, demi, and semi-permanent colours while toning hair, and much more. In the NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing Fast Track course, you will practise styling and dressing hair to salon timescales, as well as recapping NVQ level 2 hair cutting techniques.
When it comes to your theory, you will gain an understanding of the relevant policies and procedures when carrying out consultations, as well as learning about health and safety policies, the science of colouring, and understanding the tools, equipment, products, and techniques used for colouring and lightening services.
Next, you will learn more complex styling techniques like pin curls, plaits, and finger waves, and practise creating occasion looks on your client’s hair. You will learn a combination of cutting techniques using scissors, razors, clippers and more on both doll heads and clients. You will gain skills in using block colouring, slicing, weaving, and back combing. When it comes to theory, you will learn concepts such as understanding the factors that influence creative hair styling, including, equipment, and products used to style, cut, and dress hair.
In month 3 you will learn men’s haircuts and styling techniques, using Wella products alongside clippers, scissors, and tapes. You will learn how to undercut, asymmetric cut, and texturise medium and short hair. We will also introduce you to the quickest colouring techniques, such as balayage, root fade, ombré, and baby lights, as well as the best ways to maximise your turnover. You will also join us on an organised trip to the Wella Academy. Your theory lessons will involve business management advice, such as identifying profits against stock, discovering the best ways to promote your business, understanding a variety of different booking systems, and comparing the benefits of employed and self-employed work.
You will recap on all the techniques learned so far, as well as focusing on perfecting skills on clients. When it comes to colour correction, you will also identify incorrect colours and how to rectify and neutralise tones. You will gain knowledge of performing chemical and non-chemical straightening services. Your theory modules will consist of understanding undertones when lightening the hair, colour choices, unwanted tones, different number systems and more.
In your final month you will implement all the practical skills you have learnt whilst also aiming to work to salon timings and guidelines. You will be in a realistic working environment, completing assessments and working on advanced techniques.
